I have a Dell laptop with a Sony DVD+-RW DW- Q58A. It reads and writes dvds, but it will not recognize cds or writes to them. There is no firmware update offered at the sony site or the dell. I've switched the primary and secondary IDE channels to DMA mode, no dice. I've also manually forced to drivers to a CD drive, still nothing. I'm pretty sure rmaing the drive is useless because I've searched forums and found that this drive has this problem. So, before I take that step, I would like to know if anyone has suggestions/answer to my problem.

The only thing I can think of is that the laser for CDs is broken. Drives use different lasers for DVD and CDs, so it sounds to me like the CD laser is broken. Perhaps this is a general problem with this drive, so you might wanna try getting a refund.
