Due to the loud crowd/ devout fans... 11 on the field of play, one in the stands (the crowd personified as one person).

Because the Stadium gets so loud during their home games Texas A&M has a serious home field advantage making it really difficult for visiting teams to come into Texas A&M and play well. This make the Texas A&M home crowd the 12th man.

As others have said, the "12th man" symbolizes the crowd as another player, helping the home team obtain a tremendous advantage.

I think the Seattle Seahawks even *retired* the number 12 back in the early/mid 80's as a tribute to their fans, even though no Seahawk player had yet worn the jersey (and now never will).

Most of the answerers are right that have already posted.

A&M is a "military" school and they are LOUD... they are notorious for their "cheering". As well as so many being in Military Uniform with the "boots" on and they STOMP for more noise!

There are eleven players on the field and "the 12th man" symbolizes (all of their fans) helping to carry them to victory...

(except for yesterday... lol... when Tech beat them ... however, Tx. Tech has BEAT them 9 out of their last 12 matchups...)

Some interesting answers have been posted and most are correct, to a point. The real reason is that, in a game played many years ago, A&M ran out of players and a student in the stands had to be recruited to play so that there would not be a fofeit.

Ever been in the stadium?

You can't even hear yourself talk.

Now try to be a quarterback calling out audiles at the line of scrimmage.... freaking impossible.

Diehard fans out there.

I hate them! *L*
