"like 500 dollars is 1000 pesos in mexico!!!"

Like, no it isn't. Like, it's 5,500 Mexican Pesos.

Some people not experienced in traveling have the mistaken idea that if 11 pesos equals 1 dollar that it is 11 times cheaper. It's a different monetary system and the exchange rate not directly linked to how cheap a places is. Before the conversion to Euros, you could get about 2,000 lre to the dollar, yet for most things, Italy is more expensive than the US.

In Mexico, somethings will be cheaper than back home, many about the same and a few more expensive.

There is plenty of bottled water around and most hotels will palce a bottle in your room. Some hotels have there own water purification system, so the tap water can be drunk.

Speaking some Spanish can definately help, but in the area you area you are going to, none Spanish-speaking visitors are common. That's not the case away from resort areas.

Mexico has a very good bus system. For more info on the buses, go to:

Just came back from Cancun this week. There were 6 of us that went and had the best time of our life. Stayed at the Gran Caribe Real and it was unbelievable. The place was spotless all the time. They clean 24-7. There is not anything that you could want from a vacation and not get it here. They wait on you hand and foot. Ride the bus. It is cheap 65 cents one way. They drive really fast, but seem to be safe. You can go to market 28 and get really good bargains. The airport is a little crazy, people act like they are waiting on you and really they are trying to get tips. Just keep walking and say no thank you until you know where you need to be. I don't mean a few people either I mean tons of them. Everywhere we went they accepted us dollars,if you don't exchange your money. I think you lose a few cents on the dollar, but what is a few cents. Go to senor frogs in the daytime if you are not a party person you will have a blast. Hope you have a great time.

In Cozumel right across the main street from the port (embarcadero) there is a nice plaza with lots of tourist friendly places to shop, eat and drink. My all time favorite is called Cobalto Azul and has a pub-like atmosphere on the inside and great dining at tables outside the door. The outside area is covered by awnings and is great for people watching while you enjoy a snack, meal or a cool drink.
Across the plaza there is a beautiful, centuries old church that is a must see. If you are staying far from the hustle and bustle of the town you may want to rent a jeep...Even if only for a day or two so that you can explore parts of the island (South & South East) that most tourist never see!
There is a reputable dive operation that I like to use called Aquaworld and it is conveniently located to most hotels/resorts. Even if you are not certified to dive, they offer 'Resort Certifications' that only take a few hours to complete and are relatively inexpensive. Once you complete the in pool training you get to go with your instructor on an open-water dive. Your first dive will be in calm, shallow water and after that you can be a bit more adventurous.

If you want to be away from the crowds try The Presidente' Intercontinental Hotel. It is great and has a really good on site dive operation so you don't have to drive or take a taxi to go diving. The dive company is called Scuba-Do.

Don't order a fruit plate from room service and have it delivered to your patio unless you are prepared to stand guard of it...I did this and stepped into my room to get my camera and when I came back outside, the birds had eaten ALL of my breakfast!!!
Looking back on it I laugh but not then...I was starving!

Also, If you want to, you can take a ferry (HUGE BOATS that are really fast and have stewards/stewardesses serving drinks and snacks) across to the main land port at Playa del Carmen. Once there, walk the streets and enjoy great shopping and restaurants or hit the sandy beach. This ferry ride is only about $7.00 US for a round trip.

The 7 Dollars = around 70 Pesos and the Us dollar is accepted if not prefered every where down there.

Buenas suertes and have a great trip!

I just got back yesterday from Puerto Vallarta, if you are staying in one of the resorts it is great. I was with a friend that has been there several times. I rode in the public bus and it was fine. As others have said don't do anything dumb.
It is hard to tell you more without knowing where in Mexico you are going.
Have fun.
P.S. brennan4p was a little off it is 1000 pecos = about $100 USD, 5000 pecos = about $500. USD

And you don't need to speak spanish. The most of the people speak in English.

Don't do anything stupid. Their laws are different than ours. Where we give their illegals some civil rights, in Mexico the governement is corrupt and they treat Americans badly. Stay out of trouble. Follow all the laws. Don't do anything stupid.

Do not drink the water, you will get a terrible case of "Montezumas Revenge". Only Bottled water and even then you have to be carefull not to drink from glasses washed with the water. But have fun, and go scuba diving in Cozumel. It's wonderful.

I agree on the tap water, always drink bottled water.
I disagree on the fruit: fruit is very tasty and comes in great varieties. Peel the fruit. Plenty of different fruit juices and "aguas".

Don´t drink water from the faucet. You can eat some fruits actually.

Strawberries are dangerous, don´t eat them, not even washed.
Grapes could be dangerous too.

All fruits you can peel are safe.
