Ok, I am in the 8th grade, and I told my mom that I feel "weird" when I change my pad at school..... you know, all the noise it makes, and the process of wrapping it up and all that, It makes me feel funny while I'm doing it..... so suggested that I am ready for a tampon, but she said it can cause infections and all that..... so if you all can tell me what should I do while using a tampon and what I shouldn't do..... Thank u! O yea, and do a tampon hold less blood than a pad?

Contrary to what people have said here;

Tampons DO cause infections.

This is true no matter how long you leave them in for, commercial tampons are the most harmful out of over twenty different menstrual options – they are also not more sanitary, cleaner or more hygienic than pads, quite the opposite.

Your vagina is self-cleaning, it has discharge that flushes out excess bacteria and dirt as well as helps in keeping the walls of your vagina moist. Tampons absorb discharge as well as menstrual fluid meaning that the bacteria is kept within your vagina, the tampon then provides the bacteria with a pores warm and moist environment where bacteria can multiply. Tampons also dry out the walls of the vagina causing vaginal splitting where bacteria can grow and where potentially the risk of TSS is greater. Commercial tampons are made from synthetics and treated with chemicals done purely to make them whiter, these chemicals can interfere with vaginal pH, this in turn throws the balance of 'good' and 'bad' bacteria out of whack leading to infections, chemicals can also easily get into your blood stream collecting in your body potentially effecting your general health. There are also factors of friction from insertion, allergic reactions to chemicals, and tampons expanding into the cervix contributing to menstrual cramps, many women also report heavier menstrual flow when using tampons.

If you do use tampons over other options I'd highly recommend you try using organic tampons, sponge tampons, or homemade tampons as these carry far less risk as they do not contain synthetics or chemicals that can harm your vaginal health – all these types of tampons are more environmentally friendly, sponge and homemade tampons are also cheaper. Make sure to use the lowest absorbency possible for your flow and change every 2-4 hours ideally, also no not wear to bed or before your period. Tampons do carry more blood than pads, however they cannot be worn as long.

I'd recommend learning about tampons, your body and safer options such as cloth pads, homemade pads or padded panties as this won't cause the problems at school that you are having now with commercial pads (or organic pads – you didn't say what you were using), they are also more comfortable and healthier. Alternatively you could try using menstrual cups as these are totally internal, they can be worn for up to 12 hours as well as while you are asleep or before you get your period so a lot more convenient, they are 100% safe as apposed to tampons, they are also environmentally friendly and a lot cheaper than tampons. Most menstrual cup brands give a money-back-guarantee so you can try them and send them back if you don't like them.

If you have problems changing your pad in school maybe you should ask yourself why that is, there is nothing embarrassing or otherwise negative about menstruation, if in the school bathrooms it is a guarantee that the majority of the girls menstruate too. Don't be embarrassed about your body, there is nothing wrong with you, it is what makes you a woman just like everyone else in that bathroom with you.

Wearing a tampon does increase the risk of you suffering Toxic Shock Syndrome, but the chances are still incredibly remote. To make sure you get the best out of tampons and stay at your healthiest, change them every 4 hours, and always choose the absorbency that is right for your flow. For example, maximum at the start of your period and minimum at the end, or right through if your flow is always light. It's very important that you get this right. If you do, it will hold as much as a pad.

With regard to TSS, if you feel ill and develop a fever while using a tampon, remove it immediately and tell a doctor. Relax, you'll be fine.

I have been using tampons since I was your age and I have never had an infection or any other health concern from the tampons. They are more sanitary than pads. They are more comfortable. The eliminate a lot of the menstrual odor you have with pads. You should change then often though - everry couple of hours. You should also use the correct size - nothing to big (especially at your age). Follow the instructions in the box and you should be okay.

Hi, I always use tampons as I find them much more comfortable. When you buy a box of tampons there should be instructions inside on how to use them, they are pretty simple to use.

And don't worry about the noise pads make when you're in public, all the other females are using them too. If you think statistically a quarter of healthy teenage girls round the world are on their period at any one time.

Go ahead and use the tampons and don't worry about infection. If you change out every few hours there won't be a problem. Start with a junior, and make sure it's inserted far enough up, or it will be uncomfortable.

super absorbancy tampons work wonders. and tampons r much more comfortable than pads. its not difficult to put one in. just ask your mom for advice or help. the risk of infections r low as long as you dont keep one in for more than 6hrs or anything like that. and dont take out a dry tampon either cuz thats dangerous (and painful!) too.

That's about the time I started to use tampons. Start small, with a regular and see how it holds up. It is best to change them every few hours because you don't want to get TSS (Toxic Shock Syndrome). They do hold just as much blood as a pad and trust me, once you start using them, you'll never go back.....good luck!!

tampon can only cause infection if you leave them in too long, but that goes with pads too. I think it's all a matter of preference on which product you feel comfortable with. Try them both and decide what you prefer ... it is your body.
