Sometimes it is an effort to hide a smile/expression we may not feel is flattering, but often it is a sub-conscious effort to conceal strong emotion. People condition themselves from childhood to not allow others to see who they really are. Too many opportunities to be hurt. So we hide the most emotional parts of ourselves. We try not to cry in front of people, we try to be tough, not show dissapointment or excitement. When these emotions overwhelm us, such as in a high pressure situation ie. x-factor. We intervene physically to keep people from recognizing our emotional vulnerability. This reaction may not be the same in a group of intimate friends, but in a public situation it is a very natural response.

People usually cover areas that they want to hide, and since they are on television for the world to see, it is probably an unconscious defense mechanism that when they are getting through to the next round they are so happy that they are automatically giving away their vulnerability in their facial expression so feel the need to mask it from others - if people know how badly we want something, there is a power imbalance

Embarrassed or ashamed or a case of too many paper-razi-a-zit ? Think is part social conditioning.
I don't see excited tribesmen do that. They kind of jump around or raise their face and sometimes hands to the sky. Tribeswomen too. Definitely not the animals. They howl run around in circles.

People cover their faces when expressing joy because it is the unconscious act of wanting to feel physically what you feel emotionally.
