Bound's hubby here:
I have a GMC 2500HD Diesel pickup. I have had many gasoline (petrol) powered trucks, and this is my first diesel. I think the diesel engine is a better choice over the petrol engine for several reasons, as follows:
a) Comparing the same truck with diesel versus petrol engines, the diesel gets almost 21 miles per gallon, compared to 14 miles per gallon under identical conditions. While diesel is currently a little more expensive than petrol, I get more mileage out of a tank of diesel than gas.
b) Operating costs are less. When you factor the cost of fuel and oil, the operating cost for the diesel truck is $0.12 (US) per mile compared to $0.19 (US) per mile for petrol. With the diesel, I only have to change the oil every 10,000 miles. With petrol fueled engines, oil changes may be required every 3,000 to 4,000 miles.
c) I have over 72,000 miles on my diesel pickup, and have performed 7 oil changes and 1 transmission fluid change. No other maintenance has been required in the 2 years 2 months I have owned the truck.
d) Petrol engines require petrol or a petrol-ethanol blend. Diesel can burn: diesel, bio-diesel, peanut oil, kerosene, or any combination of home-brewed "oil" alternatives which can lower the cost of fuel significantly!
In summation, I beleive that diesel is inherently better than petrol today. By the way, when I use the truck exclusively I run about 500 miles (1200 km?) per week. If petrol were better than diesel, why would over-the-road truckers not use gas instead of diesel?
Good luck in your selection!

if that 40 km is through traffic go with the diesel [uses less fuel idling and are tougher in the long run than a petrol engine] if all motorway and limited congested traffic get a petrol engine as most diesels are too slow to keep up with traffic [unless turbo, most of these will accelerate with almost car-like qualities].note if looking at brands such as v.w. remember that they have very poor electronic reliability records world wide and all German plastics suck no matter what brand.

Short distances you might get full advantage out of diesel. 20k each way one person think about a bike for good days. Suzuki makes a micro car with a 1.4 liter petrol engine that might be a little better for short trips. Ask your co workers what works best in your country.

Diesal car is good for fuel savings but it is costly to maintain. Petrol cars are best if used for local travel & not for long distance.
