Yes, no problem. I got mine from Comet online a couple of months ago a HP Pavilion dv5157eu . 1 gig of RAM, 100 gig HDD, 6 in 1 card reader, wide screen, and has a neat little infra red remote for the DVD rewriter to play DVD or music. That slots away in the side. It's wireless so I had a wireless router and that connects my laptop and my old desktop too. I had a wireless dongle with my router and that connects my desktop to the router. The disadvantage was all the software was preinstalled. Works 8 is garbage! XP home is OK - but I'm already getting problems - with programs like the HP music player. That is resident and has to close everytime the thing comes out of hibernation. 10 gig of the 100 gig HDD is a partition is for backup. if they advertise 100 gig - you expect 100 gig useable. I also had a router with it - turned out to be DSL and I'm on ADSL - so had to go back. Comet was a good price - and the hardware is great - the software by Microsoft that is poor and unreliable. I hope they come out with service pack 3 for XP and actually make it reliable - get rid of that stupid WGA rubbish. Even doctors in Casualty have had WGA popping up on computers! I wouldn't touch Vista - they have obviously released it early to get suckers to debug it for them. So, look at Comet, also Aria and Misco for good prices.

Yes, you can, as long as your laptop has the same type of access media you are connecting to the internet with. For instance, if you dont' have a wireless access point, you'll need to make sure your new laptop has Ethernet, or you'll need to buy a wireless access point along with the laptop - and make sure the laptop has wireless capabilities (wifi).

Linksys, DLink, Netgear, and others make fairly easy to set up wireless internet gateways; I'm assuming you'll want more mobility from the laptop, so you'll need to make sure you have wireless ( wifi, also called "802.11" a, b, and g ) both for your internet connection and your laptop.

But yes, no matter how you do it, you can use the same internet provider.

Yes, make a note of your username, password and the phone number which your modem dials. You can find them in Control Panel, Network Connections.
Then once on your laptop create a new connection in Control Panel.
If you have an active e-mail account with your ISP you will also need to make a note of your mail boxes, from options within your mail client.

Yes. You are only changing the equipment you are using to access the internet service provider.

yes.
you can even network them both together either with a dedicated cable connexion or with a wireless router keep the tower system where it is and keep mobile with the laptop nice on those summer days or working in bed.
if you decide to go with the wireless option please get a good spy ware package which will stop unscrupulous people from gaining access to your system
