For example: An artist you have followed for years in alternative, suddenly puts out a blues album. Does that artist make you have a new appreciation for the blues at that point?

Hmm...good question. Not really, but friends of mine have given me new appreciation for different kinds of music that I liked but hadn't listened to all that much. That's a really good question, I'll have to think about that some more....

The soundtrack to "Oh Brother Where art Thou?" got me interested in Blue Grass and Allison Krauss and Union Station which lead me to listening to some of the cross over sounds of country singers and that lead me to watching CMT which lead me to buying country CD's which lead me to buying an i-Pod which lead me to loading all the old CD's I had, which now that it is at my finger tips I listen to all the genres I own which is quite a menagerie of sound.

So basically a modern rendition of the Oddessy made me listen to music...which isn't that funny because what I always remember most about that story is the island with the sirens.

(That answer would be called "Taking the Long way" which is a song by the Dixie Chicks--which I would not know had I not bought that CD Oh Brother Where art Though)

(Sorry I was reading if you give a mouse a cookie.)

Take Ice-T - for years he was a hardcore LA street rapper until he got tired of the game and wanted out.

Next, he released heavy metal albums calling for the death of cops. He realizes on one hand that releasing an album was stupid and on the other hand that he was a better actor than a rapper.

Now, he plays a successful cop on Law and Order, SVU and has not released any new albums - rap or heavy metal. People have forgiven him for his past transgressions and I've developed a fond appreciation for rap which spoke out AGAINST today's Atlanta based hip hop culture.

I can't honestly say "led" me to a new genre of music, because I love so many different kinds of music. I will give kudos to Rod Stewart for his romantic classics, and Paul McCartney and Billy Joel for their classical, Kid Rock for his country, Garth Brooks for his pseudo rock, and there's always the great Tony Bennett for everything.
