I want to go away for a week somewhere where there is lots of stuff to see. Syria sounds good, but i am worried about safety.

It's fairly safe now that the fighting in neighbouring Lebanon has quieted down.
I was there last year, and the Syrians are among the nicest and most hospitable people in the Middle East. Damascus is also one of the last great undiscovered cities - go out and explore!
I would recommend keeping your nose out of politics while there, and purging your baggage of any references to anything Israeli.
Also note that the internet is heavily censored in Syria, so be prepared to be generally cut off from the world while you're there.

I have no idea about Syria but I would like to say that no matter where you go in this world today you place a risk on yourself so go and risk seeing beautiful places etc and don't worry too much about what papers and the media say, unless it is very obvious.

If we listened to everyone we would not travel at all and miss out on a wonderful world of people and places.

it is risk-free. We bypass only approximately each and every 3 hundred and sixty 5 days for some weeks. no remember the place you bypass on holiday or stay there is an probability of a few stupid guy or woman/group doing some thing. yet once you reside like that then you definately would desire to easily stay in a bomb look after and contact it an afternoon. Turkey is excellent ... you will like it.

I heard from a reliable source (CBN, which broadcasts on American t.v.) that there is a great deal of military activity in Syria at the moment and that Israel is bracing itself for a possible attack from them. I wouldn't wish to go there myself until I was sure that things had calmed down. But it is a lovely country!

I think wait until everything has calmed down. Otherwise, go elsewhere, like Europe, if you can't wait and still worried about safety.
