if you are not on a server platform, then try using apache. Or you can go with a linux distrobution, there are tons to chose from. Here are some: http://distrowatch.com/

"cpanel" is probably a web-based account administration tool specific to a web hosting vendor, it sounds like.

There are many things about web servers and web hosting systems that are specific to the specific type of website and traffic one expects to see; for instance, a server that stored genealogical data might expect to see a lot less data transfers per user than one that provided popular movie trailers.

If you're used to hosting at a third party web hosting business, you're going to need (probably) the webserver application (most resellers of web hosting use apache [www.apache.org], which is free) along with a database application (most resellers of web hosting provide MySQL [www.mysql.org], which is free) and an application language (most use PHP[www.php.net] or perl, both of which are free) to run your website on.

You'll need an operating system - most consumers have Windows on their computers, but most webservers run Unix variants like Solaris, BSD, or Linux.

A good choice for someone just getting into hosting a website at home is Fedora ( www.fedoraproject.com ) or Ubuntu ( www.ubuntu.com ); however, this is not a small learning curve, and you probably won't want to do it on your main PC.

In the end, you may want to refer to this website, which has a step-by-step tutorial on building a *Windows* based webserver:

Good Luck!
