You might notice similar bumps on the F and J of a keyboard. So you can find a starting point without looking.

Mine only has one dot. but i agree to easily find where the other numbers are by knowing where the 5 is.

I think they may be for blind people, so they know where the number five is, then they can just go up for the #2 or down for the #8 etc.

my car radio has it on the preset buttons. I can keep my eyes on the road and find the 5 button and maneuver to all the others by finding the dot.

traditionally it has been used for being able to find the numbers in the dark. if you know where the five is, you can find the rest by touch.
