Since I started working at this place, the big boss has usually ignored me. Several times, I've walked by him and said hello. If he answers, it's with a frown, but in the next breath, he'll be saying hello to someone else. In fact, I've thought several times that he's done this on purpose. This was very surprising to me. I came from a place where all of the management thought very highly of me. In fact, they just gave me a very prestigious award. What do you think about this situation?

Aha I had a boss like that. I'd always say hello to him but he wouldn't say hello back. I used to think he just didn't pay attention or was preoccupied or something. But once in a meeting he complained about us not greeting him! Then I stopped saying hello to him. Luckily, he did not have the right to fire me. :-)

I have known a few big bosses who don't give the time of day to the little people who actually make the company run. But giving the benefit of a doubt, maybe he's deep in thought--he is the big boss--and a response doesn't come to him right away. It happens to me sometimes. It doesn't register that someone spoke until they've passed.

You can do one of two things: ask your supervisor if next time the big boss comes through s/he can introduce you, or next time hit him up with something that would normally require someone to respond. say, "Good morning. I don't think we've formally met. I'm Traveller and I work in [department]." Or say whoever you work with.

Then if he ignores you, you know he's a rude little bastard and money doesn't buy manners. ;)

Now that's rude! It's very inapropriate not to say hello back, but to treat your employees like that is worse.
That's not the sign of a good leader. I've seen CEOs at work and they always take the time to say hello to the people who work for them when they walk by them, because if you don't respect your employees how can you expect them to respect you.
Keep saying hello. Be the bigger person.

Just keep being pleasant. Smile and say good morning. He may have a lot on his mind, or may not be a very social person. Maybe you can set a good example for him--just because he's the boss doesn't mean he has good manners.

Running a company is a hard job, he probably can't even remember the names of anyone more than one level below his.
