I would say your alternator is bad. The serpentine belts have automatic belt tensioners, It is spring loaded. I have seen wires that have burned off at the alternator post. When you have the car running take it to a auto store and they will check the battery and alternator free.

First check the connections on your battery. Make sure cable is not rusted or loose. Those wires help charge the battery. Serpentine belt. Check for cracks if there are some have it replaced. Check the battery to make sure it does not have a dead cell. A dead cell can drain the power out of the battery. You need to get this to a shop so they can run it on a diagnostic machine.

Nobody mentioned the wires between the alternator and battery! A "low resistance" (connection that is less than 100% solid). Could be returning low voltage to battery, thus causuing it not to get a full charge/. Also a poor connection to the (field) "stator" circuit on alternator might not be feeding full voltage through the aternator to make it charge "full" output!

Also I am assuming that you don't have an intermittent corroded connection on the battery cables, - putting on jumper cables might move them enough that they connect for a while!

I really doubt the belt could be the problem!

from my experience your alternator is probally bad. if it is the belt it would be making a squealing noise. also if it is a loose contact try moving the wires to see if the light goes out. the wires will be either in back of the alternator or at the top at the back. you can tack it to autozone and they will check the alternator for you to see if that is your problem.

problem is so simple depending on where you live find a local discount parts store like Advance auto parts or Auto Zone they will check your charging system free of charge and they can tell you if its a belt or a alternator problem
