Everytime I answer/see someone else answer something well-thought out, it is given a bad rating or looked down upon. Why are the favourite answers the ones that are crazy and off topic?

You said it ! man ! Many you're right !!!
So I was upset when people think that the point level is or even percentage of best answers is some kind of high intelligence ! Such rubbish! I've seen some super answers, and some other stupid lame answer gets the "best answer" vote. Casting away modesty, even some of my answers, some were awesome and no positive marks for it, and some were average or blahhhhh and heck, they gave me "best answer" for at least one of those.
Also, I'm disappointed by lack of thought or knowledge or effort or imagination on at least one of answers to one of my questions. They just do it to get an extra 2 points even though its a totally lame answer. I feel your pain, man. All we can do is find the good in this thing, and never mind the nonesense in it; "not throw out the baby with the bathwater".

People give an answer a bad rating because they can. Ignore them. Sometimes they are even jealous.

Crazy answers are preferred as they make the asker laugh and enjoy (thats what he/she's here for) but mostly that isnt the case. If a person asks a question seriously he/she'll prefer a logical answer.

I cannot answer as to why other people give thumbs down, although I do have my suspicions about the motives of some. I can however tell you why I give thumbs down.

The content of the answer is just plain silly in a serious topic.
The content of the answer is not relevent to the question asked.
The answerer is unnecessarily attacking the questioner or other answerers.
The content is slanderous or inflamatory purely for shock value.
The answerer cuts and pastes long strings of information without presenting any original opinions of his/her own. Give us your opinion, not someone else's. Want to cite a source, post a link.

Left one out and this is my personal pet peeve.
Answers which rely on fabrications or distortions of the truth to make their point.

I really miss the original way of doing things where only the best answer was open to thumbs up/down.

Interesting: Getting thumbs down for answering a thumbs down question. Does anyone else see the irony in that? Did I mention that thumbs down don't phase me a bit. I just give my opinions, don't really care whether people like them or not.

sometimes people don't know you're being logical or rational, and so if they see something in your answer that they don't like or disagree with, they will automatically give you a bad rating. sometime they have no logic themselves and they don't understand that you are being rational and logical and trying to give a perspective on both sides of the situation.

Because this is an illogical forum. I think some folks give "thumbs down" out of personal or political spite, or to better their own chances of being chosen "Best Answer". Ideally it should encourage the most well-thought, articulate response, but people may enjoy being entertained more than enlightened.

Then again, if you can do BOTH then you're in good shape. I've had a few decent responses given in a very condescending tone (i.e. "duh! Why doncha GOOGLE it next time?") so I've given thumbs down for tone if not for accuracy or helpfulness.

Some people enjoy oblique thinking, even if it is not germane to teh question.

If, at this question I would give the answer.

"Millard Fillmore was the 13th President of the Unietd States"

Completely off topic, but some may find it witty enough to give points to

Perhpas you could explain why we are in the FIFA catagory?

People give bad ratings because they have deferring opinions or maybe they simply dislike that person.

Most of the people who use this site are morons, and it upsets them when someone actually writes an intelligent answer.

My guess is because they see the logical answer after giving their own mean/sarcastic/silly answer and they know THEY won't win any best answer awards so they try to sabotage the one's that are smart and might win.
