having a debate with my friend, i say 4-4-2.

I would tend to say 4-4-2. Some say it lacks the width required for the modern game, but that sounds like a load of old balls to me.
Although the best formation actually depends on the opposition. You would want a formation that attacks the opponents at their weakest. And a team that can handle changing formation if the opposition gets the measure of the formation they started out with.
