Since you can't subtract 9 from 3, borrow one year, which is 12 months. So 36 years and 3 months is the same as 35 years and 15 months. Now subtract to get 33 years and 6 months.

1)Convert to yrs in decimal
36.25 yrs-2.75 yrs= 33.5 yrs i.e. 33 yrs 6 mths
OR
2) Subtract yrs against yrs and mth against mths
36-2=34 yrs
3mths-9mths= -6mths
34yrs-6mths= 33yrs 6 mths
Other 3rd way is to convert to mths but that is more troublesome so don't confuse yrself with that
