Politics aside, you'd think this would be gunpowder that they'd want to address before.....well, 5 weeks before fall elections?!

I think we the public should wait and see how this plays out, but certainly if there was a cover up from the speaker of the house then he should also step down as this is a very serious occurrence. Why would he do such a thing. Politics make strange bedfellows is the answer. Or maybe he was waiting for congressmen Foley to do the right thing. Naw, politics my friend, politics is the right answer.

Foley was a representative, so to replace him would have required an election, most likely a special one last fall. I don't believe the governor could appoint a replacement, just does that for senators for some reason. Also since he is from Florida, the governor there is Jeb Bush, certainly not a democrat.
The republican leadership was stupid--had they released the info last year, a special election would have happened and he may have been replaced by a democrat. It is all a big power play in Washington, we need to just tell them all enough, and vote for every opponent. I am doing that, even though I know my congressman and like him, he is still a part of the problem and toes the party line in most cases. He will still win, but my negative vote will help send a message I hope that we are all dissatisfied with all of them!

Maybe to complete an investigation? After all 'they' knew about Clinton's sex scandals long before the public did. And we all know how THAT turned out. Sexual predators (regardless of who they are) need to be locked up and hopefully they will have rock solid cases before the little 'spin' machines go to work.
I keep reflecting back to the teacher and 14 year old boy that recently came to light. She got off w/ house arrest (double standard) because as public opinion states--boys want sex. Oh, so is it different if a gay boy wants sex? The whole system stinks and EVERYONE of those child molesters (man, woman, teach, politician) should all be put away for life--and yes, regardless of political affiliation.

It doesn't make any sense to me either. I would think The Ministry of Truth could have concealed them until After the election. We're gonna miss ya Republican Congressman Mark Foley.

Hypocrisy... that is the fact. Now can you imagine what else they are concealing from our view? 9/11, Iraq, Libby, Plame, the list just goes on and on.

If they had revealed him earlier, he would have been removed from the Senate and the governor of his state, who is a Democrat, would have given the opposing party more power. (By appointing a replacement, liberal, Congressman)
They waited until Congress was out of session.
