Gardening is a lot of fun, but make no mistake about it, It's a lot of work and requires a lot of attention. I am now 76 and have had a garden most of my adult life. I believe when you are picking the fruit and vegies when they first begin to produce is the best time.
My garden is about 25 ft. X 25 ft. along one side I have aspargus that never needs much more than weeding because it comes up every year with spiers that I put in the freezer as they come up, then I rotate my crops every year (thats best) I have had to lessen my gardening in the past 2 years (age) but I had 2-3 rowes of potatoes, about 6 ft.of carrots, about 6 ft. of turnips, a row of snap beans, onions 1 kind for the tops and 2 kinds for the bulb, radish and I use German Giants, Tomatoes and I use 3-4 diffrent names Celebrity, Golden boy (for color) and lately I have been useing a tomato called Prudens Purple I like this tomato because it has a lot less seed and it is a very meaty and good tasting tomato, Cucumbers (we like the burpless)
We have 2 apple trees that I started from a seed , 2 grape vines, a peach tree (young) And when ever we eat fruit I save the seed and just through them in the garden, then in the spring if you see one comming up just transplant it where ever you want (take plenty of dirt with it so as not to disturb the root system). At this time of year I am getting the garden ready for spring (cleaning it out) When I cut grass or pick up leaves, it all goes into the garden, I till it under a bit so the wind dosen't spread them around again. Have Fun with your Garden.

I have several gardens devoted to different things. I have a winter greens garden filled with mixed greens. I also have a small grass garden at the back of my house that still has lush clumps of a variety of grasses I have collected over the years. In the front of my house I have a garden with phlox and canna lilies bordered by irises now dormant. On a terraced hill I have day lilies, rhododendron, monkey grass and holly hocks...one of my favorite flowers that usually re-seeds itself did not come back this year...cleomes or spider flowers.
Oh btw I live in the piedmont of North Carolina which is a temperate region and a great place to grow plants.

WE have a very small sq.ft. garden (phoenix AZ) about 2ft.by4ft. two times (two 2by4 boxes) The strawberries have taken over , and this is good 'cause the mint was starting to become a menace . The tomatoes have been growing but not producing any fruit...the Basil is bumpin' but the parsley fizzled-out...had one volunteer marigold and one watermelon...and lots of garlic...looking foreword to this years winter ( hopefully it will cool down soon-100 degrees F is still a bit warm for most winter crops!) gonna try some new soil and more variety this winter!

Small, lots of lawn with a major stinging nettle problem. They are coming up everywhere and I can't get rid of them.
Black ants invading my pots and killing my plants.
South facing has the sun most of the day.
Sheltered by buildings on both sides.
Virtually no top soil just 2" then builders rubble.
Hard to grow anything, even my toms were a dead loss this year.
My runner beans which were growing up the fence died
so did my strawberries in my hanging basket.
The only thing still growing are the weeds and nettles.

My garden has tomatoes and potatoes all in two straight rows, then a row of marigolds (the rabbits do not like them) and the next row is carrots, then a row of beans, hot peppers, sweet peppers, marigolds again, squash, cucumbers, and then beats, and one more rows of marigolds. My flower garden consists of marigolds, petunias, foxglove,2 bleeding heart bushes, carnations, mums, hollyhocks, and baccums.
I also have a small field where I am starting some blueberry bushes, goose berry bushes, elderberry bushes. Also in the Field are oak trees, maple trees, cherry trees, lilac bushes, and honeysuckle.

It's a dream come true and I hope you won't be mad, but it exists in the future. Right now my husband's in residency so we rented instead of buying a home, but we want one and one primary reason is so I can garden like my Grandma taught me! I am a veggie fanatic and can't wait to "grow my own." I want an apple tree and a cherry tree. I'd like a pergola with grapes. I will grow onions, carrots, potatoes, celery, green onions, strawberries, cabbage, collard mustard and spinach greens, tomatoes and brussels sprouts. I'd like flowers, too, but I'll leave those to my hubby who loves landscaping. Gotta have a few lilac bushes though... the most heavenly smell in the world!!! I'll also do lots of herbs like cilantro, basil, rosemary and such for cooking and making soaps and candles. Man, I cannot wait, thanks for letting me share my fantasy.

My garden is an antique bath tub filled with carnivorous plants. It has all different kinds of North American pitcher plants, sundews, bladderworts, and Venus flytraps. There are also bog orchids and bog lilies in there with the carnivorous plants. Quite an exiting little eco-system where life and death drama is played out every day.

They have been given decrease than the plastic masking and decimated my crop. those have been fireplace ants. They make nests interior the muse gadget of small timber and handicap the form of the plant. they gained't injury your cucumbers or basil too lots, different than whilst they build an anthill next to the plant. The worst element approximately ants is they're going to chew you once you're interior the opportunity of harvesting. i don't tolerate fireplace ants in my backyard. the superb element i've got found out to regulate them is Bengal great airborne dirt and dust, yet you need to use it with discretion. follow organic and organic lifestyle as much as you are able to. solid success.
