pitchers need to work out different body parts to be effective and they practice more on pitching than hitting. Mostly they need loose and limber arms and upper body while powerhitters bulk up their arms. Different mechanics.

B/c we (yes we I played for 16 years through college some semi pro, as a pitcher) focus on one thing and that is pitching. We never practice as a hitter and if you are that good of hitter you will switch positions such as Mark McGwire who was an outstanding pitcher at USC but he was to good of a hitter not to be in the everday lineup. Pitchers run, do agilities, throw, run more, stretch, work out rotator cuff, abs, legs, and run more...thats all we do at practice...therefore we dont have time to hit and if we were good hitters we'd change positions.

It is more important to have one good pitcher against an entire lineup than just one good part of one's own lineup. For this reason, teams have their pitchers spend most of their time training to pitch, not to hit. Since pitchers have less practice hitting and are not brought to the majors based on their offensive ability, most pitchers hit poorly.

First of all, pitchers only hit in the National League. Second, they dont practice hitting so they aren't good at hitting. Did you know that it is possible for a pitcher to hit a homerun? Randy Johnson has before.

pitchers spend practice time on pitching, not hitting, because they need all of the help they can get. it is different in some cases though, like Carlos Zambrano, who leads the majors in home runs by a pitcher
