Well, you have two options --
1. Boot-up lockdown:

All computers from '97+ have this ability. When booting up your computer, you can go to your BIOS screen and set a boot-up password. You do this by pressing either one of these buttons when you see wither the POSTData screen or the OEM screen (The part where you see the big E on your screen when you turn it on): F1, F2, or the Delete button near the backspace button on your keyboard. Do not press F8, as this will lead you to the Boot loading screen where you can select what to boot your computer from. This screen can give you hard time if you don't know what you're doing, so steer clear of it. Now, on the main screen of the BIOS, there should be an option to set a password for booting up your computer. Set your password, save and exit, and when you reboot your computer, it will ask for a password for booting up.

2. Software lockdown
I'm assuming you're running Windows XP on your computer (if running Linux, I have no clue). After you log into your account, go to the User Account page, by either going to the Control Panel --> User Accounts, or just clicking on your picture on the Start Menu, that is if you haven't switched back to the classic start menu. Now, you can just set a password for yourself, and there you go. No one can get into your password... with normal computer knowledge. If you have someone that you don't want using you computer with a very good knowledge of computers, or just Windows XP, you are not safe. There are two ways to remove your password. One is to boot up Windows in safe mode and use the Administrator account to remove your password, unless you have blocked the administrator account with a password, which is possible, but you must remember the password at all costs, or else you will not be able to get into it and do system saving procedures other accounts can't. Another way is to just boot up regularly, and press CTRL+ALT+DEL twice to get a classic login screen, which you can just enter in Administrator and login, unless, once again, you've set a password for it.
So, these are all the the steps to ensure nobody but you can access your computer:
1. Set a system password to block anybody but you from booting up the computer by going into the BIOS and enabling and setting a password.
2. Set a good user password so no one except you can log into your User Account.
3. (opt) Set a password for the Administrator account so no one with an above average amount of computer knowledge can hack into your computer. *WARNING* The main admin account is the central account and what can be used to either help or hinder your computer. If there is no access to it, you run a high risk of losing your computer after a system failiure due to not being able to access critical system parts. Exercise extreme caution if putting a password on admin account.

Hope this helps,

This would deal with the operating system (ie. Windows XP, etc.)

Windows XP:

1) Click Start, Run and enter CONTROL USERPASSWORDS2
2) In the list of users, highlight the user account you want automatically logged on.
3) Uncheck Users must enter a Username and password.................
4) Click Apply.
5) In the next dialog, enter the password for the account you selected in Step 2, if any
6) OK your way out.
