If you're not going to be there for longer than a few weeks then I would suggest going to Hampi. It's a day train from Goa to Hospet and takes about 8 hours. Don't go first class or air-conditioned as you won't be able to see anything through the sealed tinted windows. The best option is sleeper class (still called this even though it is a day train). The journey takes in a spectacular waterfall and is very pretty. Hampi itself is fascinating, you can either stay there (quite basic but fun) or there are some more upmarket options in Hospet (a short rickshaw ride away). You would need to stay a couple of days as Ithe trains only run 3 days a week. It is very cheap - I think about £3 return! Hope you have a great time wherever you go.

Dear Stephen,
It is good idea that you are going to Goa by train because while going to Goa you can see some rural part of India. If you will take the first class tickets definitely it is cheaper then air. First class compartment is very safe as well as very neat & clean

it always depends on from where you start and in India the railway is always best to say. it an good idea but to reduce the cost of traveling go on 2nd class you will experience much more than that in 1st class.
