Here is a list of all the major free anti-virus programs:

Avast:

Anti-Vir:

AOL AntiVirusShield:

AVG:

BitDefender 8: (on-demand only, no real-time protection)

Clamwin: (on-demand only, no real-time protection)

Personally, I use the AOL AntiVirusShield. Don't let the name AOL scare you. AntiVirusShield is made by Kaspersky which is one of top-rated anti-virus vendors in the world.

In recent tests, the most popular free anti-virus, AVG, was only able to detect about 82% of a very large sample of viruses. On the other hand, AntiVirusShield was able to detect better than 99% in the same test.

AOL AntiVirusShield has excellent virus detection rates and is extremely light on using your computer resources.

Free to anyone, AOL member or not.

personally, we have 2 computers in the house, my husband chose mcafee and i chose to use norton. we found that mcafee was more "invasive" because it would block certain websites and it also seemed to use more of the hard-drive to run. on the other hand, norton does the same job and does not ask you a million questions.

-both software systems will detect and quarantine viruses.
-online freeware is not as comprehensive as both of these programs (both come with automatic updates against the latest viruses)
-my personal opinion, norton gives you better protection.

one is just a little worse then the other...........if u are in the market for buying a antivirus...do not select norton or mcafee..
u will have a way better time if u buy something like...
kaspersky ....or ...bit defender....them are the 2 best ones around norton will slow ur pc down and if u go to uninstall it...it is worse then a virus to remove....they have a spescial removal tool just for norton..(go figure)..mcafee is just garbage......if u dont want to purchase and u want a free avg...try grisoft.com....look for avg free antivirus....or ....some ppl will have negative things to say..but u can look at the new aol antivirus that is from kaspersky....it is real nice and does not use alot of cpu

Norton has worked for me in the past but I had mcafee on my pc over the last year to save $ but my pc just got overtaken by virus's so have switched to AVG, a free antivirus that has destroyed viruses that Mcafee could not deal with. You can download it free and this is what I am now using:

Hard to believe it is free and works so well but I also spend $50 on lavasoft spyware software that did not address the problem but AVG seems to kill every evil virus on my pc.

When you download free antivirus you don't get the full version and therefore isn't as effective. You are better off buying the full version of an antivirus to protect your computer.
