I really don't think it can personally. This is terrible because I don't get to watch it as much as i would like to.
The reason behind this is American Football. That's basically the national sport. Therefore, the rest of the world still plays the real football and we dont as much.
Its so sad.

I think it will gradually become more popular. more and more kids are starting to play...even if a lot stop later, it still means there is going to be a lot more who continue playing...so that could boost popularity. also, if david beckham comes to the US, that would promote the MLS is other countries and hopefully some more here in the US. Us soccer fans would also have to keep promoting it by telling all of our friends and getting them to watch it with us. Um...and I guess, hopefully with the increase of american citizens watching overseas soccer, that will just spread through some areas and hopefully eventually across the country. Soccer is that great enough of a sport to have that kind of impact and influence, it just might take awhile, but i believe it'll get there eventually.

Back in Jordan, football is a widely played/watched sport and is most people's favourites.
In the Uk, everyone loves football. There are other sports like rugby and such, but nothing comes close to it.
Unfortunately, now I live in the US where sports like Nascar, Baseball, and Basketball are favourites. When I see MLS games on the tele, there are about 20-30 people in the stands where there could be thousands.

Soccer was popular in the early 70's when the NY Cosmos paid big bucks for Pele. After the league folded, soccer seemed to die. Kids in school still play soccer and almost every school has a team but professional soccer is still dead.
Foreign born residents in the US still follow their countries team(s).

In Canada soccer is around 5th, 6th on the list of "main sports".
It is popular with many people, but Hockey, Football, baseball, basketball are still the "main four".
I don't really see it ever becoming popular in the US like it is in Europe or South America. Football & Baseball will alway dominate.

Soccer is already quite popular in the US but to make it more popular I would say finding new club teams would increase the popularity.

I'm not from the US, but in Canada they suck in soccer, they have a team that I've never even heard of...LOL
The major sports in Canada are Baseball and Hockey.
The country I was born in is Italy and their #1 sport in soccer!

the problem with soccer in America is that it is a more intellectual sport, and the majority of sports fans in america would rather watch men in tights jumping on eachother. Football is not the most intellectual of sports (in my humble opinion).

NO. The owners of other major sports teams control the concessions in most of the stadiums, thus reducing the profitability. Also since there aren't as many frequent breaks in the game, there isn't enough time for advertizing on TV.
