My family lives in Jersey, too!

There's a cute little town just outside of Philadelphia called Jenkintown. It's way less then 1-1/2 hours away from Philly... by car it's about 20-30 minutes depending on where in the city you're going. It's a small town with a long history. It's clean, it's quiet (usually) and it's safe.

The public schools there are wonderful. They have amazing art and sports programs. Academically, they are among the highest ranked schools in the state (at least they were when I went there!).

There is a grocery store, a gas station or two and many churches. Jenkintown is not far from two libraries and an excellent hospital (Abington Memorial... three of my children were born there!).

It really is a wonderful little town. I would highly recommend it!

I also definitely recommend living in Philadelphia, unless your work/life doesn't involve being in the city. With the amount of money and time spent commuting you're better off investing in something nicer within Philly. If you're still thinking of going further out, stick to something with an option of taking a train into the city. The traffic in the suburbs is brutal, you'll love the ability to hop a train into town vs. driving with the idiots. The Doylestown area in Bucks County is nice, near the R5 train into the city and still close to New Jersey. Doylestown itself is quite nice, quaint and historic, with great shops and restaurants. If you want something a bit more rural, try New Britain or Chalfont...both have train stations as well and are just south of Doylestown.

1-1/2 hour is a wide area of towns to choose from. Without anymore detaill, I'll say Abington Twp. No need to go out that far. But if you like the trek, Chester county is the place for you.

Harrisburg, PA. It's the capital and a lovely place to be. You can hop the train to 30th st Station in Downtown Philly any time of day and still come home at night to some peace and quiet.

I lived in Phildelphia and in Springfield, PA. Springfield is on the southwest side of Philly. Springfield is close to Philly and King Of Prussia. Deleware County is a nice part of PA as well.

If you're going to do that, keep in mind that typically, your commute into the City itself will take you onto I-76 (Schuylkyll Expressway), 476 or I-95, which can make even a drive of a short distance into an hour long trip. I work 15 minutes away in NJ (it's 15 minutes if you're driving at 5am) but it normally takes me 45-60 minutes to get home....literally, <14 miles.

And why not just move into the city? There's a lot of public transportation to take you where you need to go outside of the city.

Try the West Chester area or Royersford or even Bensalem, which is much closer to Philly.

I live in Langhorne, and its nice with all the grocery stores and both the Neshaminy and Oxford Valley Malls close by.... However, I'm hoping to move into Philadelphia when my apartment lease is up next year.
