Sorry to have to contradict some of the answerers, but, no, they do not inject into the eyeball. There is no reason to. If the eye is being operated on, it is numbed with drops first. Any injection is given in either or both corners. I have just gone through it, as I had a torn and detached retina. It is a strange sensation. As they remove the fluid from the eye ball, a small incision is make in the corner of the eyeball. They can then work on the back of the eye. The eye ball is then filled with gas, which is eventually absorbed by the body which replaces the fluid at the same time. You don't actually see them operate, just shadows.

Sometimes injections in the eye are necessary. Eye surgeons may give injections into the eyeball itself or occasionally into the muscles around the eye depending on the condition being treated. I've never experienced it but they say the pain isn't as bad as you would expect.

Yeeouchhh !!! I dread to hear if they do ! But I'll bet it's not nearly as bad as you'd think these days. When I had all my wisdom teeth extracted it was about the most relaxing thing I ever did.
