A Berserka was a Norse warrior who went into battle fearlessly, tried to emulate the attributes of the bear and often wore bear skins into battle. They would also connect to the powers of the bear and draw the strength of the bear 'magically'. There were actually three types of warrior 'cults', The Wolf Cult, known as Ulfhednar who were mainly ambushers, The Bear Cult, ie Berserkers and The Boar Cult or Svinfylking who were masters of disguise and escape, but people only remember the berserkers, maybe because they were most feared.

Berserker refers to "bare of shirt" a Norse warrior - long ships and chibs etc (you did it in history in primary). Essentially meaning someone who can "go to town"
Hope that this helps. William Wallace would have been one if he was Norse! Or Russel Crowe in Gladiator ;-)
