I don't know the technical details, but I've used both monochromatic cameras and also some which use infra-red imaging. It might be worth checking out the Panasonic website for cameras and maybe Iridian Technologies for information on the algorithm used to produce the biometric template.

No idea of the price range, but from what I gather, you could get a low-end camera for around £100.

the iris sacnners are very exspensive
