(I know I can read the Book of Guinness Hit Singles and I have, I want to know if anyone has noticed something I haven't).

Here are some examples:

* Each time Wet Wet Wet reached no1 they outsold a Kylie Minogue record
* The Levellers hold the record for most hits peaking at no 12
* The ELO achieved a hat trick of no 6 hits in 1978

Any others?

There are plenty of such examples but what a lot of people don't know is that the 'Charts' were , records were something of a rarety and the common practice was to buy sheet music and play it at home on the piano. As record players (gramophones) became more popular and widespread, then record sales increased. The charts were meant to promote the most popular artistes and persuade the public that they should buy their records as a 'must have' item. The first Number 1 was 'Here in My Heart' by Al Martino in 1952. Eventually several charts came out such as the NME chart, Melody Maker chart and BBC chart. This is why some schools of thought treat the Beartles 1st No 1 as 'From Me To You' instead of 'Please Please Me' which, of course, did make No 1 in six of the seven charts available at the time but only No2 in the BBC chart because they manipulated it as they thought the song lyrics were too suggestive.

In recent years with the decline in sales of records (Now called CD's) the manufacturers have manipulated the charts even more so that there is a new No 1 every week thus hoping to persuade more sales. It is now possible to be No 1 with sales of 25,000 CD's when in the heyday of the 1960's most records sold 1,000,000 to become No 1. Even sales of 500,000 would only give modest chart success. Also in those days many records stayed at No 1 for several weeks. Nowadays that is frowned on by the record companies as it restricts sales of other titles.
