this is quite easy to fix first go to http://uk.europe.creative.com/products/product.asp?category=4&subcategory=27&product=14096,and print out the literature for your product, then go start>control panel>sounds and audio devices and open this up and go to the audio tab,at the top there will be a drop down box,let this drop and pick your speakers(they will be listed there or it will be the name of your sound card(or onboard sound
if there is no sound go right click my computer>properties>hardware>device manger>and then expand the entry for sounds and audio...if there are any question marks next to any entries double click them and re-install driver, you should pick the option for windows to find them manually, this should re-install any drivers that havent been installed
if not, note the name in device manger for your audio device, again this could be creative, intel, nvidia ,but whatever name is in there you need to go to the appropriate website and download the audio drivers you need, sometimes these come as part of a chipset driver(like nvidia and intel)
once you have downloaded the chipset or audio drivers ,you need to install them and restart your p.c,once you have done this go back to the control panel>sound and audio devices and set your playback device as your p.c sound device, again you need to drop down the list and apply the correct device and then apply
certain devices can disable your p.c,s sound, for example i installed a viop internet phone and this configured my audio setting to usb playback device when it should of been n-force audio device
any problems let me know
good luck

Does the laptop have built in speakers?
If so, do they work?
If it does and they don't work you need to resolve that problem first, could be bad or missing sound device drivers.
I assume you've checked all the obvious software and hardware things, like making sure that the audio output isn't muted and that you've connected them to the line / speaker out socket on the laptop, not the mic input socket?
A quick way to eliminate the new speakers themselves:
Unplug the cable connecting them to the laptop.
Turn the volume control on them about 1/2 way up, say 12 o'clock. Turn the speakers on.
Now touch the tip of the jack plug that you unplugged from the laptop. You should hear some buzzing noises as you touch and release the tip of the jack plug.
If you don't, the speakers aren't working for whatever reason, check power supply and connections for the speakers.
If you hear something, the speakers are fine and the problem is with the laptop sound.

Are you positive it's in the correct socket? There are usually three to choose from, two are inputs, I think green is usually the colour code for output. Try the speakers on something else such as a portable cd player.

open the sound properties from control panel, under the volume tab you should find advanced. click that and there should be an option to change from your internal speaker system to desktop speakers.. check the volume settings in there too ok.
