I didnt read it all, but that sounds horrible! Use and abuse eh? I honestly thought they were looked after once they'd retired, how naive!

yes this is very wrong. We have the same problem here in the United States. But I know of even more inhumane ways they kill the horses. They shoot them through the head with a bolt of lead, electrocute them, hang them by there back legs and slit their throats, letting the blood gush out, or they smash their heads in with a sledge hammer. The worst part is that the slaughter houses in the Unites States go to auctions and buy horses to slaughter. They also steal the protected mustangs of our Western land. I hate how we still have two main slaughter houses for horses. I think all horse slaughter houses that sell the meat to other countries should be shut down- or maybe they should legalize it so they won't be as apt to do it- I don't know it's a confusing process.

Yes. Not only is it inhumane, in some states, it's illegal.

A perfectly healthy horse should have every right to live. Killing it would be considered severe negligence and you could possibly face fines and jail time for animal cruelty.

If the horse is extremely ill and old, who would want to eat that meat anyway?

When all is said and done, if you are truly attached to your horses (which most horse owners are, if you have a heart), you wouldn't even THINK of killing them.

Frankly, I don't see the problem. It happens in the U.S. as well, and legislation has been introduced to stop the sale of all horsemeat to France. Why not? Some of these animals have overpopulated their ecosystem. In the case of thoroughbreds, their usefulness is over. If they were cattle we wouldn't hesitate, but we have this romantic perception of horses that clouds our thinking. If there is a market for the meat, I see no ethical reason not to follow the law of supply and demand.

As a vegetarian I see no difference between eating horses and cows. It seems a good way to use up animals which otherwise would be mistreated and abandoned. Also it makes the French seem more like barbarians which is always a good thing!

Donate it to a rescue, how would you like to be shock with a cattle prod, have your feed tied together and be hung upside down and the have some one cut you wide open and have you inners spill out on the floor, Have you ever been in a slaughter house?

If the horses were going to be killed anyway why not make France pay for them. It beats having to deal with the body yourself.

OH MY GOD YES IT'S WRONG!!! How would you like it to have a bullet through your head?! I love horses, and if they are seriously injured or mentally retarded, they should be put to sleep! NOT SHOT! How would you like to know when you go out and get a burger, find out it's a HORSE-burger, and that it was your best friend that you rode since you were young?!

Sorry I'm taking all my anger out on ya.. I've just always loved horses. =(

Unless the horses are already dieing it is illigal. And just because you posted that on the internet you could be arrested for animal abuse. If you don't want them just sell them. I know any decent thoughbred horse would make you more money alive than dead. SELL them in america. ALIVE. I know I would buy them if they are decent.

If your thoroughbreds have nothing wrong with them don't kill them! Sell them to a good racing yard, riding school or even a livery yard! There is no point in wasting its life if there is nothing wrong with it.
