Tesco Internet Dongle

No. I'm not sure what Tesco broadband is - but I think it is ADSL. DSL you get if you have a cable phone. ADSL you get by plugging in to a BT line through a microfilter. I assume now you have a microfilter - with your phone plugged in to one socket and your modem in to the other and then the modem goes to your USB2 port on your computer. I had the same setup. I bought a ADSL router with a built in modem and a USB wireless "dongle". the dongle connects my desktop computer in my home office to the router and my new laptop has built in wireless and so connects to the router wirelessley too. You can get a gadget to convert a laptop that isn't wireless to wireless that plugs in to the expansion port called a PCMCIA port. I think those have a good range. I'm not sure what the range is of my USB dongle. I bought an RS11 cable to connect the microfilter in my hallway to my home office in a spare bedroom. You can also connect your computers together with wires - rather than wireless. I have 4 sockets on my router for wired connections. I think they take RJ45 cables and would connect to a network card in the computer. Setting up the network is "easy" accroding to Microsoft! lol They have a wizard for it. but I had the wrong instruction book with my modem/router and then it needed a "firmware" update. Firmware is basically a program inside the router on memory that makes it work. I paid a technician to do mine after fiddling with it for a day. Check out my website - it has a local page that will give you some idea of where I live in the Black Country - near Walsall. If you live in this area the same technician will set it up and guarantee his work for £40. It takes about an hour unless like me - everything goes wrong - then he has to come back and fix it at no extra cost - because he guaranteed his work! Make sure the wireless connection is encrypted and you have the encryption key - print it out. Look at my website - my email address is on every page - email me for more info - if you live in this area - email me and I'll tell you the guys to phone if you want it done for you at a fixed price. Get your modem/router and RJ11 from Maplin. You may be able to put your router near your phone socket - probabaly in the hall. I had a long RJ11 and took it upstairs to my office. I use cordless phones - so didn't need a phone line in. Have a good look around my website while you are on and click the Google thing that says news or video - some of those videos are cool! You can also go to my other site and download MP3's. If you're using your web space for a web site again email me for help or advice - unless you're better at it. The background music on my site plays if you use Internet Explorer - but not Firefox. The downloading of the MP3's is different with Firefox too - but I figured that out for the first time today in 30 seconds! If you collect Mypoints - go through their site to Maplin and register with them for the discount - every little helps.... lol

somebody has posted a very complete tuto..
i just want to add something..

to open your router home page, fire up your browser and type http://192.168.1.1 . Usually this is the address but i have seen
routers (out of the box and not pre configured) with the address
192.168.1.16 . Read the manual.. they usually have the username
and password to log in and the address..

I use a DLink Express EtherNetwork DI-604 router in my house. It connect up to 4 PC. No configuration needed except in the router page where I have to specify the login ID and password for my ISP. Auto assign for IP address and all are readu to go.. Just takes around 15 minutes to set up..

Good luck mate..

no, u would need to buy a adsl router. this will let up to 254 machines connect to it wireless, and 4 wired connections at the back of the router, very easy to setup, i would recommend buying a network starter kit from eg dixons, comet, pcworld etc.
