If it was the wrong ram then an error message would come up saying error in dimm module, if that happens then the two ram cards are not the same kind, old ram new ram, if it is the same ram it will work. Take the 256 out and put the 512 in slot 1(the slot the 256 was in) reboot. If it works then you will be prompted to ok the changes by pressing F1. If you wish to continue with just 512 then press F1, if not turn off the computer and replace the 256 and return to the place you got the ram from and see what the price difference is for the compatable version, might be an idea to bring the 256 with you in an envelope for protection so you can get something compatable. Hope I have helped you.

Remove the original 256 MB and just try it with the new 512. Sometimes old and new RAM don't like to play together. If this is the case then 512 will be the best you can do, still an improvement over the 256 MB.
If it still won't boot, see if you can put it in another machine and try it. RAM is amongst the most common components to be DOA.

It seems likely the new RAM is not compatible with your system.
Does the system make any beeps when it starts up? The beep sequence will give you a clue about what is preventing the machine from starting up. Each system has its own beep codes, so you'll need to check from your system documentation or manufacturer what the beeps mean. There will almost certainly be a beep code which indicates a memory issue.
There are many many different types of memory. You need to get exactly the right sort for your system.
Try either or both of the sites below which will help you identify the correct memroy for your PC

am with you Bro- i've got 4gig of RAM that did work until the mobo died lol
You've done the right thing with static so that's a good thing next you need to double check that your mobo can support the extra RAM. If it can and it still doesn't recognise the new stick apply a 72 pound hammer to the CPU, smear a small amount of petrol and ignite with [The frustration of using Windows] which'll sort you out no probs ;)

ok now what is the new type of ram you have got.. there are diff tyes of ram like SD ram... etc..
remove the 256 and tr y only with the new one.
if you get a long beep during boot... then it is either not plugged in properly or in the wrong jack... try in the right slot..
GoodLuck!

do you know if the motherboard supports 512mb RAM chips, eg u would need to check the motherboard manual or website.
it could also be possible RAM Is fault
have u tried the new RAM in on its own, if so what happens?
does the machine beep at all
or could be a fault RAM port on the motherboard.

Obviously the new bit is useless. Take it back for a full refund.
