The word "Darling" is derived from "Dear-ling", which in its own right is an affectionate created by the word "Dear" and the word
"-ling", a German word meaning "little". I hope this answers your question.

Strangely, the usual explanation for the word darling is not the correct one.

It was originally the name of a Shar pie puppy owned by early chinese royaly. This was a popular breed in china which at one point almost became extinict. This particular pup was the emperors' favourite beloved pet. However when it died, he was so distraught that he ordered that the name Darling should be changed to a term used to address loved ones. Thus when he heard someone call their loved ones Darling he was reminded of his little dog and how much he felt for it.

It comes from the old English Deorling or Dear-Ling meaning Little deer. It is seen as a term of affection because this animal is considered so cute.

Dara is Hebrew Pearl of Wisdom

Ling is a diminuitive form of a word

You could therefore deduce that a darling is a little pearl of wisdom.

I always thought it meant favourite love, a word reserved for the person you love most of all.I was pleased to read Malene P`s
answer, the "ling" bit, because I am often teased because I pronounce it `dar-ling` and not `dar-lin`. So thanks for that!
