That is one of the symptoms of iron deficiency. My doctor 'prescribed' chocolate - preferably dark chocolate - mid afternoon! Well, he wouldn't let me have it on prescription, which was a shame, but it did seem to do the trick.
The reason that you feel tired is that the red blood cells need iron in order to successfuly transport oxygen around the body. Not enough haemoglobin means not enough oxygen is reaching your muscles and your brain, resulting in a feeling of tiredness.
It is treatable but you may need to take iron supplements for several months in order to bring your iron levels to normal. There are several reasons why your iron levels may be low, so it is important to see a doctor who can conduct the proper tests.

Effects of Iron-Deficiency Anemia on the Body
Iron-deficiency anemia can range from mild to severe. A mild case usually causes no symptoms or problems. However, a severe case can cause extreme fatigue (tiredness) and weakness. Severe iron-deficiency anemia can lead to serious problems for young children and pregnant women, and it can affect the heart.
In young children, iron-deficiency anemia can cause a heart murmur and delays in growth and development. It puts a child at greater risk for lead poisoning and infections, and it can cause behavior problems.
In pregnant women, iron-deficiency anemia can increase the risk of a premature delivery and a low-birth-weight baby.
The heart is affected when there is a lack of oxygen in the body. The heart has to work harder to get enough oxygen throughout the body. Over time, this stress on the heart can lead to a fast or irregular heartbeat, chest pain, an enlarged heart, and even heart failure.

An iron deficiency means not enough of your red blood cells have the iron atom required to carry an oxygen molecule. Oxygen and insulin are required for the cells to use the sugar you eat, which they will convert to energy. Since there is not enough energy being produced to meet demand, you feel tired. It's the body's way of conserving the energy it has for the most critical functions to survive. Since there isn't enough to go around, the body tries to limit activity as much as possible by making you reluctant to do much.

iron is the base element of haemoglobin-a pigment present in red blood cells which supply oxygen to all the cells in the body.any deficiency in iron will ultimately result in reduction of the number of red blood cells and hence oxygen supply to the cells is lowered.thus the person feels tired.

Iron is the important ingredient in hemoglobin, the protein in your blood which carries the oxygen to your cells. hemoglobin becomes oxyhemoglobin as it picks up oxygen in the lungs. After it drops off the oxygen it can carry carbondioxide as carboxyhemoglobin. Your cells need oxygen to perform. You are tired if you do not get enough oxygen to the cells.

because there is iron in blood without it you would probably die, this would make you tired if you had a deficiency, also if you have to high iron it could ruin your liver, however giving blood on reular basis will drop those levels.
