It is said that the goal of advertising is to create the need for the product. Some of the commercials I see, for alcohol as an example, show all these beautiful people people being witty and alluring. Most of the bars I've been in are havens for cretins.

i think its a decorated reality
it has to reflect reality (to reach the target audience)
it always creates idealized realities (to sell)

and when you get a new car everybody stops and stares, they jump up from their cafe seats and swoon all around. Advertising is intellectual pollution. it is a pointless waste of resources. If no one advertised it would be an even playing field. The ONLY reason people need to advertise is because everyone else does. Its as pointless as fast track swim suits, people wear them because everyone else is wearing them and if they dont they get left behind.

I think it reflects idealized realities. Most of us wouldn't even notice what we need or lack until we see certain ads.
