Industrialism made it easier to survive for people, after that more children survived and overpopulation was a fact. Also historically large cities has been overpopulated and disappeared for that reason since they couldn't provide for the people living there. Today we can provide in one way or the other.

The reason for overpopulation is pretty simple. People continue to have more and more children while they are living much longer lives due to the giant leaps in medical care quality.

Consider that 100 years ago, the average lifespan of a human was 58 years old, or less. Now we are living 30 years longer than that, quite easilly.

THOMAS MALTHUS (1766-1834) wrote a treaties tied to this subject. seeing first hand what happened during the Irish potato famine and his contemporary Darwin, his hypothesis is that population growth will continue just as long as the local recourse's can handle it. once population over exceeds what the land can feed it will begin declining. this is a very naturalistic/liberal approach that influenced the discipline of economics deeply.
today we know that the potato famine was not only the outcome of the fungus that destroyed the crops, but also hazardously influenced by economical messieurs orchestrated by the British empire.
