Maya means everything in this universe or what we see is illusion. And that we sense or see or feel etc is the image we give through our thought. That means WE CREATE EVERYTHING THROUGH OUR THOUGHT" . Now you can understand why we need to have positive thoughts.

Let us get this clear :

1. Maya is more powerful than the most powerful thing in the world

2. Maya does not really exist. It exists only in the context of the worldly phenomenon

3. One can never defeat Maya since Maya is the most powerful thing in the world

4. One can be free from Maya by knowing the reality - the Brahman

5. Maya is responsible to put a veil around you so that you can not see (perceive or experience) the reality, you can not know the reality until Maya is acting as a veil to forbid you from seeing the reality

So to reach the reality, to see or experience it one has to take up the right (spiritual) path with an objective to reach the reality.
Otherwise maya will always keep you bound with its bonds.

Adi Shankara said "Brahma Satya, Jagat Mithya"
which means :
Brahman is the Truth, world (he refers to maya here) is unworthy (or useless or insignificant).

Note he did not say whether maya is real or unreal.
Since we all live in the world and we see, experience and work in the world. So he said it is something unworthy or useless or simply insignificant.

That is when one becomes One with Brahman, the world, the maya becomes insignificant (or useless or unworthy) for the one.

But until then accept the existence and power of maya and work in the world to earn your living in a noble and a right way.
Since all and everything in the world seem to be bound by the laws of this maya. You can't escape from its bonding until you know the reality, the Brahman.

When the moon is reflected on the water the reflection is the 'maya' of the real moon. The reflection is real, but not as real as the moon, since the reflection depends on the moon in order to exist.

We are the reflection of God. His maya.

MAYA as such is supposedly an illusion, created to facilitate the growth and development of people/animals/things associated with it.
