he was a reptile specialist & animal conservationist, did TV programs on Crocodiles, as well as other animals. He died whilst filming with sting rays a few weeks ago. Very ironic considering they aren't meant to be dangerous, unlike the many seriously danerous animals he worked to conserve.
Go to wikipedia it will tell you more about him there:

Steve was a herpatologist (reptile specialist) although he had no formal training. He took over his Mum & Dad's zoo in Australia (originally called the Queensland Reptile and Fauna Park, but he later changed the name to Australia Zoo). He specialised in the education and conservation of mis-understood and unpopular animals such as snakes, sharks and crocs.
He also owned a lot of land in Australia which he was keeping undeveloped as natural habits for the native species.
He was also involved in several research programmes including sea turtle tracking, reptile behaviour and breeding programmes.
RIP

His "official" job was currator of the zoo that his family now owns. The other "jobs" he did were to support his zoo and conservation efforts, and to educate people about the "unlovable" animals(plus, I believe, so he could have fun). His wife has said that he left enough money to keep his zoo going strong for a long, long time. If you are wanting to follow his path, good luck, we need more like him. The first step would be a degree in just about any type of animal science.
And, for those who have been rude in your replies, my son asked me the same question, and meant nothing mean by it. Steve was his hero, and his death has been taken very hard in our house!

I can't believe how low some people can be. The man is dead, let him rest in peace and let his family grieve without your stupidity and ignorance.
As for the idiot (unclebob) who says Steve is nurishment for earthworms, and then has the gull to say he respects him, most people wouldn't consider your comment to of a respectful nature. Wow, There are way to many people on here who have some growing up to do. Sad thing is, if it was a member of their immediate family, or a close friend for that matter, they would be singing a different tune. For all the idiots that think it is cool to crack jokes at a dead man, grow up and get a life, you bunch of losers.

People that try and hide taking the mickey out of dead people are VERY sick. He was a great person and if it was not for him then nearly every croc in and around australia would be dead. thanks to Steve people know what to do then both croc and human don't get hurt.
REST IN PEACE Steve,

Right now, if he's working, I would imagine he is an angel in heaven. Steve ran the Australian Zoo and helped educate all of us in regard to conservation and wildlife.
