Before I could read I used to love the book Little Black Sambo. I amazed all my parents friends as I knew the words off by heart and knew when to turn over the pages. The book ended up falling to pieces as I read it so much. I also liked pancakes and think that had a lot to do with my love for this story. I think the book is now banned but as an innocent two year old it was my favourite story.

Man, this takes me back - The Ghost of Thomas Kempe by Penelope Lively written in 1973 or Coral Island by RM Ballantyne written in 1857 (I just looked that up!). I also liked the 'Adventure' books by Willard Price, blimey... I'd forgotton all about that. I studied Of Mice and Men for 'O' Level English too and it was the first time I read a book and felt completely gutted at the end.

GOODNIGHT MOON!!!! It was my dad's favorite book as well and I still see it when I am around children and I just love that it is such a classic. Later I loved the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and went on to read the rest of the collection. As a teenager I took a liking to anything by Stephen King.

The book titled: "The handy encyclopedia of useful information" published in 1945 (not sure about correctness).

I lost the book in 1975 but could not get a copy even after writing to its publisher, who was long gone when my letter reached them in USA. The letter was sent back to me with postal-remark as "the address is no longer valid" or something like that. I could never recover my childhood loss even after getting first CD Encyclopedia-95 which was far superior to the book.

PS. Though it may not fit your question of "favorite book", but I considered it as a book which I carried with me for many years from 1960s till 70s.

As i still love reading i cant name an all time fave, but i started off with Enid Blyton, the magic faraway tree, famous five etc.
Progressing on to books like black beauty, heidi and from there i discovered horror.
