Lay down an old cloth or old cotton pillow case. enough to cover a certain amount of area ,
then while its fairly hot just iron off the melted bits stuck to the iron,any liquid would just cool the iron surface,just do it dry and keep moving to the parts of the cloth thats still clean.

with the iron warm rub a normal bar of soap repeatedly on the wonderweb and then iron a damp cloth pressing down hard untill the staining is removed

You could of just googled this question, look up iron-off hot iron cleaner. That will clean it just like new.

You can buy a new iron for about £10 these days . Is it worth the bother? Just buy a new iron.

sparkling your iron's soleplate to remove scorch marks from the soleplate of your iron, scrub it with a paste made through heating up equivalent elements vinegar and salt in a small pan. Use a rag dipped in sparkling water to wipe away the last residue. good luck !

Very fine steel wool, rub gently,do not scratch the surface, if this doesnt work, try using the wool with salt or bicarbonate of soda,better to have the iron luke warm.

while your iron is still hot sprinkle table salt on the sticky stuff on the iron then take a piece of brown paper bag and scrub until the sticky stuff comes off.

I heat it then dampen a soft cotton cloth triple it put iy around a blunt blade and lightly scrape the burnt parts
