depends on the vehicle. Is it a VW with a spring loaded clutch cable?
If so replace the cable assembly.
Is it a gm or ford with a ratching clutch pedal assemby? If so the plastic ratch broke off of the top of the pedal assembly?
Car type would be helpful to give you a more complete answer.

Their is a spring which got broken !
It's all a trade-off
How many miles do you have on your auto and age?
Get a quote on replacing the spring, throw-out bearing and complete clutch assembly, let that be your item cost selections. Sometimes the cost in difference is not that great and peace of rest for the future is out gained. IT also, depends on how long your planning to keep the auto too.

Sounds like the pressure plate collapsed, the spring you are hearing about only assists the pedal or the cable may have snapped inside.
