They are more into "consulting" now.. They don't make notebooks now. Its taken over by "Lenovo", they build some desktops & more servers. But there main business plan is consulting now.

Like the name states, International Business Machines, is exactly what they do. They are everywhere, and do almost everything.
My experience, with IBM, is mostly in regards to the retail industry. They provide the systems used in all aspects of the business; such as Point-of-Sale, printers, etc.. They also provide consulting services, maintain/repair equipment, and more.
Three things, I do know about IBM, is...
* they have alot of smart people working for them
* they are bigger, than you could possibly imagine
* they are always hiring for a multitude of positions
However, all the positions they are hiring for, seem to require MANY years of experience and/or education.

**Update**
After writing the answer that I had submitted one hour ago, I realized just how little I knew about IBM. So, I went to their website, to do a little more research.
Now, I feel really foolish, and embarrassed of my answer.
I was going to delete it, but decided not to, because it didn't seem like the right thing to do.
Instead, I would like to recommend that others do the same. Go to their website, and read about their business. But more importantly, read about the people who contribute to the success of IBM everyday:

IBM does stuff in the business sector, and work with larger machines like their supercomputers like 'Deep Blue'. They're quite active, but they don't really do consumer retail products so much anymore.
They did sell notebook, but they recently sold that section to Lenovo.
