It depends on what you want from your pet. I have a both. The advantage of a gerbil is that they are sociable which means you can have more than one providing you get more than one at the same time (ie two sisters or two brothers)- siblings get on better with each other than two strangers. Gerbils can be kept in a large tank with compost and you can have lots of fun watching them do the thing they love to do best-DIG!
Hamsters are good pets too, but if you are looking for something really active then a hamster probably isn't a good choice. They are lovely animals but they spend most of their daylight hours sleeping, but on the other hand they are very lively once they are awake. They love trundling around in a plastic wheel (where a gerbil is more likely to gnaw the wheel into oblivion). Hamsters are solitary animals so you won't be able to keep more than one.
Hamsters have shorter tails than gerbils which makes these animals less suseptable to a tail injury, but if you take good care of a gerbil and ensure that its enclosure is safe with no risk of its tail getting trapped then this isn't a problem.
Both animals are easy to look after, and both will bite if they have a mind too, its all down to their personality and how careful you handle them.

they're about the same, gerbils are more active than hamsters I think, the kids had both & it seemed to me the hamsters just wanted to sleep & eat, they will get really fat if you let them, the gerbils would play in that plastic ball & roll it all over the house.

Hamsters because they are easier to handle and aren't so quick as what gerbils are!

circulate with the gerbils. Gerbils execs- lively in the process the day- exciting to video show- dont scent undesirable cons- takes a quick collectively as to get them use to being dealt with Hamsters execs- bigger so extra relaxing to hold cons- scent, prefer to be left on my own, not too lively, would chew. yet once you're actually not constrained to those 2 get a rat. not something yet execs and no cons. Rats are friendly, smart, sparkling, loving, study tricks, like to be dealt with and be with their proprietor as much as accessible. you in simple terms would desire to get 2 or extra because of the fact they are social animals.
