& what's the best value MP3 player in mid-range? Is the Rio a good one? New to the download/MP3 era! Any advice would be most helpful, thanks.

I think it will take you between 15 and 30 minutes to download an MP3 - go to my website - click the logo on the home page - then that will take you to another sites with 5 free MP3s to download. They download fast. Just right click on them and saveas. The logo on my home page says "Megan sings the blues". You should hear one of her songs as background music on the home page - if not - it's your slow connection. For an MP3 player look at Maplin they have loads. Mine has a lot of functions, including record - so you can do your own "podcast". But I can also record from digital TV. I connect to a DVB with time shift and a good song comes on - I take it to the start of the song - press play and record on the MP3 player and then stop on the MP3 player at the end and get recording of high quality like that. But it also records from it's built in FM radio - that isn't good. The radio interferes with recording. I can also set the timer to record a meeting with the built in microphone - but that isn't very useful. It picks up every sound. Touch the MP3 player and it sounds really bad! So you might as well have one that just plays MP3s - unless you want to record too. Mine also eats batteries - because it has a light up display. I bought one as a gift that is great on batteries - no light up display. It just plays MP3s - nothing else. It also had an SD card with it. That was on sale at Maplin with the 128 Mb SD card for £9.99. The 128 Mb SD card cost £19.99 if bought seperately! So a great bargain. The kid I bought it for has a couple of hundred MP3's on CD and just changes the playlist on the SD card - every now and then. Incidentally, that was made in Tiawan and I bought it for a kid in China. I had an email today saying they are still enjoying our Western music! lol So a good deal for £9.99 although the airmail postage cost me a bit! Aria is worth looking at too - but watch the postage costs!

You're using a 28.8 baud modem? You'll get less than that speed when connecting to the Internet or even another modem. The reason is that there is also special control and information bytes that accompany the actual data when your modem communicates with another place.

Now, let's say you're downloading an MP3 file that's 4 megabytes in size. For argument's sake, we'll say that you can get a constant download speed of 2 kilobytes per second (2048 bytes per second ).
The transfer time would be around 35 minutes.

Even if you have high speed Internet, the download time is determined by the file server that you're downloading from. Many file server's set a pre-determined download rate (e.g. 128 kilobytes per second) to accomodate a large number of people accessing the server.

If you're looking at used .MP3 players, get one that is USB 2.0 compatible. The older USB interface is much slower, so transferring files from the computer to the MP3 player will take much longer. If you look around the Internet, you might be able to find some MP3 player reviews.

On dialup of that speed I would estimate up to 15mins per average mp3 track. Simple MP3 players are pretty much of a muchness. Your choices will be based around capacity (how much music you want in portable form at any one time). What formats above mp3 it can play ie: mp3, Windows media (WMA),AAC (Apple itunes) or even .ogg.Other factors are to do with battery life and ease of finding music in the player (ease of use, screen navigation etc).
