It may be "divali" festival of lights to celebrate the harvest

It's religous. Many different denomonations exists there. I've heard from an India colleague that there are more denomiations there than here in the US. Any religious group can use any number of events as part of their routine training and teaching of their religion. Kinda of cool actually.
