Actually, it must stand to let the oil in the compressor go back down. And that is only if it has been lying on it's side for longer than an hour. If not, you're fine. If it has been, wait at least 12 hours before you plug it in and run it.

I just brought a new freezer and was told to have it switched on for an hour before i put any food into it as it has been kept standing up in the factory. If it has been laying down then you must not put food in there for 24 hours.

If it has recently been moved in an upright position let it stand for 1 hour then switch on - allow a couple of hours to cool down.
If it has been transported on its side (which is not recommended) then you should allow the freezer to stand for 24 hours before switching on.

did not even know you had to let the gasses settle

You are supposed to let it settle for four hours but if it hasn't been shaken up too much it should be o.k. to use straight away.
