I am using this accountng software on my laptop, and most options (like generate reports) are not available without a printer - not even the preview options. On another computer with a printer, however, it allows me not only to print, but also preview and manipulate the data on my reports before printing, which is the option I'd like to have available on my laptop. The same happens when I try to preview a document in Excel - it gives me a "no printer installed" error message. Basically, I want to have the preview options available on my applications - is this possible without a printer? Can I install a printer without actually having a printer, like a quasi printer?

Hi! All you need to do is go through the steps to install the printer that is not there. If it doesn't matter what printer you 'install' you can just use drivers that Windows (or your operating system) already has. At the end just confirm that your test page printed out correctly, LOL.
More specificly -
In Windows:
Click on Start
Choose either Printers and Faxes or Control Panel THEN Printers and Faxes (depending on your version)
Click Add Printer
Follow the steps in the wizard using a printer and drivers from the lists provided by Windows.

you should be able to install a file printer from the new printer dialogue.
that is a driver that instead of sending its commands to a real printer, writes them into a file, so it can be printed later, or on a different computer.

Yes, Just use the add printer wizard and pick one at random and set it as your default printer. I have done this before myself.
