They have not found the cause yet. There are theories and you can look them up online. There are 3 ways they treat it and some doctors combine all three:
Here are the 3 approaches with some examples of each:
Medications - including antidepressants, antianxiety drugs, analgesics, hormones and diuretics.
Psychobehavioral - including exercise and psychotherapies (cognitive-behavioral, coping skills training, relaxation).

If you have some of these symptoms 10 to 14 days before your period and they improve when your period starts, you might have PMDD

a) Changes in lifestyle and diet. Anxiety and stress control.
b) A group of drugs -- SSRIs - selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors - is used to give relief.. taken 10-14 days b4 menses. They are actually antidepressant drugs, but dont get confused -- this in no way means that you have depression!!

Licorice root,Chaste tree, Dong Quai, Black Cohosh, St. Johnswort, Kava Kava, Evening primrose oil.
The first four are for balancing hormones. St. Johnswort is a serotonin re-up inhibitor. Serotonin levels can be increased with:
St. Johnswort, Tryptophan and B6, Methionine, and food with more carbohydrates than protein.
Evening Primrose oil has Cis-Linoleic acid, and Gamma-linnolenic acid. Both are known to be enormously helpful.

Many of my clients have achieved great results using a soy-based natural progesterone cream. You may not get immediate results, but many have reported their symptoms have lessened or disappeared by the 2nd or 3rd month. If you'd like some back up documentation, I'd be happy to share it with you.
