My girlfriend does not drink large amounts of liquid before bed, or during the night but has to get up to go to the toilet at least 3 and usually 4 or 5 times a night. I'm sure she only passes about a thimble full each time! Any ideas?

Thanks for the answers so far. It doesn't hurt so isn't cystitis. This has been going on for around 6 years, so she isn't pregnant. She thinks it could be stress related because she says it was worse during her finals, but not as bad when she was travelling - do you think this is possible? She's 22.

That really isn't normal. If you have ruled out cystitis, I would encourage her to be evaluated by a urologist. There may be some other type of pathology going on which should definitely be treated. It is also possible that she may have a "structural" problem in the pelvic area that could be repaired.

If the urologist doesn't find anything, another possibility is endometriosis...especially if the need to pee is cyclic. In other words, does it happen EVERY night or is their a correlation to where she is in her menstrual cycle. Endometriosis can spread to other organs and when it effects the bladder, it can create a sense of urgency, even when the bladder isn't full...especially at night.

I don't know if she has painful periods, but don't rule it out either way. Endometriosis is way UNDER-diagnosed. While cycle pain is typically associated with mild to moderate cases of endometriosis, strangely enough, the worse the case of endometriosis, the less pain there is.

It could be either signs of stress or mild incontinence . Your doctor will advise and allay her fears. There are bladder control techniques that the GP will explain. It may even be diabetes and in which case they will do a quick easy urine sample test . Take care , hugs to you both!!

if it hurts when she goes it may well be cystitis, tell her to drink lots of water or cranberry juice, it will prob settle down. if it doesn't you can buy sachets of powder that you dilute with water from the chemist that will deal with it (cystopurin is one). If it doesn't hurt her when she goes, it could be a sign of diabetes in which case she should get checked out by her GP. Hope that helps :-)

YOUR GIRLFRIEND MUST BE SO TIRED SOME MORNINGS..WHAT I ADVISE IS THAT SHE SEEKS MEDICAL ATTENTION. HER DOCTOR WILL DO A THOROUGH CHECK UP AND LOOK AT HER HISTORY.
THERE IS A SIMPLE OPERATION THAT CAN RESOLVE THIS .
HER DOCTOR WOULD BE ABLE TO ADDRESS THIS WITH HER.
GOOD LUCK AND I HOPE SHE GETS SORTED SOON.
YOUR A VERY THOUGHTFUL BOYFRIEND IF YOUR WRITING ON HERE FOR HER...AS IT OBVIOUSLY BOTHERS YOU TOO.

Could be a low level infection, or could be a sign of diabetes.
Is it just at night or does she go frequently all day?

She should ask her doctor.
