To forgive is divine...to forget is just plain stupid.

I fully understand my religious teachings on the subject and do eventually forgive. Sometimes it takes minutes, other times weeks or months and in a couple of occasions, years - the longest being 22 years. If an insulting person has not got the decency to apologise in a correct manner, I take my time in giving forgiveness.

*The reasons we feel anger toward others and ourselves are all illusions. When we realize that and forgive ourselves and others, the anger is naturally replaced with love and joy. It takes love to forgive...love for yourself, love for everyone, love for everything.

Forgive those that hurt you, and forgive yourself for your involvement. You will always instinctively never get involved with them the same way, nor set yourself up to be hurt by the same person.

The longer you hang on to it the longer the pain remains. If you just forgive and walk away (forget), but remember who not to be to close or trusting to anymore. Did that make any sense?

'Fool me once, shame on you but fool me twice, shame on me' is a philosophy i've always carried. In the Bible, we are commanded to forgive. Its almost impossible to forget a serious hurt full offense but if forget means 'not to bring it up ever again', I believe you can forget as well.

1828 Webster defines forgive ;
1. To pardon; to remit, as an offense or debt; to overlook an offense, and treat the offender as not guilty. The original and proper phrase is to forgive the offense, to send it away, to reject it, that is, not to impute it, [put it to] the offender. But by an easy transition, we also use the phrase, to forgive the person offending.

Forgive us our debts.

If we forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly father will also forgive you. Matt. 6.

As savages never forget a favor, so they never forgive an injury.

It is to be noted that pardon, like forgive, may be followed by the name or person, and by the offense; but remit can be followed by the offense only. We forgive or pardon the man, but we do not remit him.

2. To remit as a debt, fine or penalty

I believe it in to the degree that if a person doesn't do it again, then you should forget. No one wants to be reminded of something that they have done wrong and are sorry about it. I think the forgetting part is the hardest to do.

Sometimes you gotta forgive or things can't go on. But forgetting is detrimental. Forget, and they may be back to finish the job!

For an excellent explanation about how one can forgive, but not ever really forget, try reading Aesop's fable about the farmer and the dragon.

I do believe in forgiveness. To forgive is devine! it takes a lot of pride and responsiblity to forgive someone and it lightens your burden as well. But it also takes the same amt of effort to apologise too.

I say forgive if they are truly sorry. I'm sorry, but I think it's nearly impossible to forget something hurtful. It fades with time, however.
